SLA 3D Printing for Architecture and Monuments – Clock Tower Replica by Make3D
Client Requirement
The client approached us with a unique and meaningful idea. They wanted to recreate a miniature replica of a heritage clock tower, originally built to celebrate H.H. The Nizam’s Jubilee.
The challenge? There was no 3D scan, no drawing, and no physical model only a set of photographs.
Still, the client wanted the final piece to:
- Be cast in epoxy resin
- Show detailed architectural features
- Look visually rich and heritage-inspired
- Be suitable for display, gifting, or collection
Challenges
- Design from Photographs Only
We had to design the entire structure based on visual study capturing proportion, ornamentation, and historical styling.
- High Detail and Precision Needed
Since the product was to be made into a gift item, the quality and finish had to be high-end, showing even the smallest carved details.
- Creating a Mould for Resin Casting
We had to first make a high-quality 3D printed model, which would then be used to prepare a mould for epoxy casting.
Action by Make3D
We followed a clear, step-by-step approach to bring the clock tower to life.
Step 1: Studying the Monument and reference photographs
We began the project by carefully reviewing all available photographs of the clock tower shared by the client. This step was important to understand:
- The proportion and layout of the structure
- The position of elements like domes, clocks, arches, and windows
- Fine details like carved inscriptions and base supports
This helped us visualise the 3D shape and plan the design strategy.
Step 2: Designing the 3D CAD Model
Based on our understanding of the structure, our in-house design team developed a detailed 3D CAD model from scratch.
We paid special attention to
- The overall geometry and symmetry
- The detailed clock faces, windows, and arches
- Capturing heritage styling such as cornices and plaques
This 3D model would act as the master design for all further steps.
Step 3: SLA 3D Printing of the Master Model
Once the design was complete, we used SLA 3D printing to create a physical version of the tower. SLA was chosen because it gives excellent surface detail and smoothness perfect for architectural models.
This printed model acted as the master for mould-making
Step 4: Making the Mould from the 3D Printed Model
The 3D printed model was then used to prepare a mould. This mould would be used for epoxy casting perfect for detailed replication.
The mould captured every surface feature from the printed model, including tiny carvings and text.
Step 5: Epoxy Resin Casting
Using the mould, we cast the final product in epoxy resin. Epoxy was chosen because it is:
- Durable
- Lightweight
- Suitable for decorative finishes
Once cured, the part was removed from the mould and cleaned carefully.
Step 6: Finishing and Painting
To give the final piece a premium, old-world look, we painted it with a bronze-antique effect. The color added richness and depth, giving it the appearance of a vintage metallic sculpture ideal for display.
The final product was true to the original clock tower elegant, detailed, and meaningful.
Client Satisfaction
The client was extremely happy with the outcome. Even though the project started with just a few photographs, the final result was a high-quality miniature replica that retained the beauty and emotion of the original monument. It was exactly what they had envisioned.
They also appreciated:
- The attention to detail
- The clean finish
- The ability to reuse the mould for more replicas
Conclusion
This project is a great example of how modern technology like SLA 3D printing can help preserve the past.
From studying a photo to delivering a beautifully finished epoxy replica, every step required creative thinking, technical skill, and care.
